January Runnings

I did quite a bit of running this month after deciding to sign up for my first half-marathon on March 22nd. It is the L'Arche Half Marathon in support of housing for disabled individuals. Because of this, I've been trying to get my butt in gear so that I can do the best I can (and not die of exhaustion) during my race.

Because I have so many photos from this month, I chose to compile them into one post, both for my sake and for yours.

January 15th

I started out with a goal of just running 10km but at about 9km, Laura sent me a picture of her 22km that she had just completed. 22km...more than a half marathon! FOR FUN! I thought she was crazy, but at the same time, my competitive nature burned inside of me to run farther than I was planning on. I didn't go all out for the 21.1km of a half marathon, but I finished at 15.3km, my farthest and longest run. I guess it goes to show that a sense of competition can drive you to do better (even though it wasn't meant as such).

January 17th

Laura invited me to try a new trail with her at Fish Creek Park in SE Calgary. We wanted to explore more of the pathways and trails but because of the awful snow and ice on the ground, we decided to play it safe and stick to the path at the top of the crest. To make ourselves feel better, we took a trip to IKEA afterwards and got ourselves some ice-cream. Ice-cream makes everything better, doesn't it?

Laura decided to take a petite break in the tub at IKEA.

January 18

Laura and I signed up for the MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) Race Series #1 5km. I have no idea what we were thinking because we both worked night shifts right before the race. We basically got an hour of sleep beforehand. I'm pretty sure if we hadn't signed up together, we probably would have bailed. That being said, we got up and headed down to Shouldice Park near the Bow River. The entire race, we hustled like crazy so we could finish and go home to bed. I was exhausted by the end because Laura is a running ninja but I was proud of myself when I was finished.

I decided to make the run a little more interesting by adding self-adhesive moustaches. At least we entertained our fellow runners.

I moustache you a question...but I'll shave it for later.

Laura and I finished in 27th & 29th place out of 128 people!

January 24

On my phone, I have a nike app that I use regularly to track my running. A new feature was added recently that gives you a coach to help you train towards a goal. I entered in my half-marathon for March 22nd and it created a training program for me until the big race. As a result, I did my best to get out there and make my digital coach proud!

Ran Day 2 of my nike half marathon training.
January 25

My nike app coach instructed me to run 19.31km this day. I was a bit doubtful that I could accomplish anything near as far, but I put my sneakers on and gave it a go. I decided to try running around the Glenmore Reservoir and, what do you know, I accomplished it! It was very difficult and my knees and hips were cursing me, but I was proud that I could push myself this far and long.

My view of the Glenmore Reservoir at sunset.

Running over Glenmore Trail. It was interesting to see a busy highway from this perspective.

So happy to be done that run! It was pitch dark by the time I finished.

January 27

Day 4 of my half marathon training schedule. I ran around the neighbourhood by my house. It was still really slippery so I did my best not to fall. Working towards the big race.

January 28

I decided to give my poor purple running shoes a break and bought some new ones at Sport Chek. They are the Nike Free 5.0 + Shield if that means anything to you. The lady at Sport Chek showed me the built in reflectors on the front of the shoe that add some extra pizzazz. They were super light and comfortable when I tried them on so they were an instant purchase! So worth it! I decided to try them out for the first time on the treadmill at my gym (Spa Lady). I didn't want to get my brand new shoes dirty just yet.

Anyways, that's enough about my boring run updates. I try to document them for my own purposes just to see how far I've come and the progress I've made. It's also a nice way to remember the places and people I've ran with. It reminds me that running can be difficult at times, but is always rewarding.

Post-Christmas Crackers

Lately, Jared and I have been trying to make it to his parents house on a monthly basis for Sunday dinner. We try to make it for the first Sunday of the month, but that doesn't always pan out. In either case, we managed to make it on January 12th for a good visit and some delicious roast beef with mashed potatoes. Jared's parents are both excellent cooks!

After dinner, Jared's parents brought out some Christmas crackers that we had intended to use when the whole family (minus missionary James) was around for Christmas. The crackers had been forgotten so we decided to bust them out for some after dinner fun. There were quite a few of them so we got to open 2-3 of them each. They had funny little prizes in them like keychain flashlights, mini calculators, pens, bottle stoppers, mini tripods, and small cloth shopping bags. We put on our fabulous gold crowns after and I instructed everyone to strike a pose. Everyone did, as you can see, except for my dear Jared. He smiles all the time except for when the camera is on him. That's when he refuses to smile! I guess it could be worse. He could be picking his nose in the picture or something. Anyway, here are some pictures from the evening!

Jared showing off his new mini calculator and his unimpressed face.

Date Night: Catching Fire & The Keg

On January 8, Jared and I took advantage of a night together and decided to go out on a date. We were so fortunate to be given some gift cards over Christmas so we used a gift card to the Keg to have a delicious dinner. Jared is a man so obviously he loves steak and his stomach was extremely happy that night. The food was delicious and it was nice to get out and talk face to face for a while. After dinner, we went over to Chinook Mall to go see Catching Fire, the second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy. I loved it! I am a huge fan of movies that stay true to the novel and I was not disappointed. Jared had also read the books and said that he enjoyed it too. It's nice to get out every once and a while and have some fun together as a couple, especially with our busy, and often opposite, schedules.

I'm a Disney Princess

My running buddy, Laura, and I discovered something amazing while running in Weaselhead in early January. We were running on the trail on the way back to our vehicles and happened to come upon a pretty little wooded area. I stopped Laura so we could take a picture, as we often do on our runs, and suddenly Laura noticed tiny little birds flying amongst the trees above. As a surprise to me, she actually knew what kind of birds they were and the fact that they were actually quite friendly. The little birds were called Black-Capped Carolina Chickadees. She demonstrated that, usually, if you hold out your hand, they will land on your hand to investigate (probably because they assume you have some kind of food). She stood there for a few seconds with her hand extended and, much to my surprise, a little chickadee swooped down from the treetops and landed right on her hand! I was amazed! I tried a few minutes later and had the same result. In that moment, I literally felt like a Disney princess with friendly woodland creatures coming to me and singing in my ear (okay, well maybe not singing). It was an awesome experience.

Because of our magical experience with the birds, we decided to give it another try later that week. This time, however,  except, we brought food as an added incentive for the birds to come hang out with us. We brought dried cranberries and sunflower seeds as our bird bribes and, let me tell you, they literally ate it up!

I love Laura's stunned expression in this picture!

One of our fine-feathered friends.

My bird friend and I took a selfie together. I love how the bird is actually looking right at the camera.

Laura and bird selfie.

I predict we will be crazy old bird ladies in the future, not crazy cat ladies.
Such a great time! Laura and I had a ton of fun and I hope to reunite again with my aerodynamic amigos soon!
